

Alfred is survived by his parents, Alfred Albert Walker, Sr. and Ruth Emeline Walker of Niles, MI; his wife, Denise Bailey Walker of Williamston, MI; his daughters, Adrienne Lynne Walker of New York, NY, Leah Walker Sheets (Robert Sheets, Jr.) of Portland, OR, and Whitney Lynne Walker of Brooklyn, NY; his grandson, Cameron Walker Porter of New York, NY; his siblings, Marjorie (Jim) Stypczynski of Buchanan, MI, Sandra (Don) Hollingsworth of South Bend, IN, and Timothy (Beverly) Walker of Middlesex, NC; his aunts, Minnie Garrison of South Bend, IN and Marjorie Norton of Detroit, MI, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He dearly loved Mai Motobuchi Rosenthal (Aaron) of Boston, MA and considered them daughter and son-in-law, and daughters, Ella Sakura and Serena Haru as granddaughters. He is preceded in death by brothers, Mitchell Walker and Stephen Walker both of Cassopolis, MI (survived by their wives Adeline and Caroline respectively).
Alfred was born on February 28, 1949 in South Bend, IN. He attended Niles Brandywine High School. His love of learning led him to Michigan State University where he graduated in 1972 with a B.A. in Anthropology and a M.A. in Urban Educational Counseling (1972). After a short employment at Community Mental Health in Flint, MI, he became a counselor for Lansing School District, helping students and their families for 32 years. He was an active Lansing Schools Education Association and Michigan Education Association member during his educational tenure. After retiring from Lansing School District, he continued to counsel students as an Academic Advisor for Lansing Community College until 2014. He was a Crystal Apple recipient for his outstanding educational contributions.
Alfred was an active member of First Church of Christ Scientist, East Lansing where he served in many capacities, Sunday school teacher being his favorite. Alfred was a loyal Spartan, ushered at the MSU football games and rarely missed a home MSU basketball game. He loved music, served as chair of the Okemos Music Patrons and chaperoned several international Okemos High School Orchestra trips while his daughters were in school. Alfred felt honored to serve as Vice President of the Albert Baker Fund, an international scholarship foundation and was particularly proud of the Fund’s most recent work in Africa.
Alfred was a committed and loving husband, devoted and proud father, loyal friend, consummate teacher, tireless mentor, humanitarian, peacemaker, and a man of principle and integrity.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at the University Club in East Lansing, MI at 3:30 PM, April 23, 2016. In honor of Alfred, scholarship fund donations are being accepted at the Michigan Gateway Community Foundation, 111 Days Avenue, Buchanan, Michigan 49107 (identify Brandywine Class of 1967 in the memo space) and the Albert Baker Fund, 1510 J St. #150, Sacramento, CA 95814.
