

Doug was born on December 26, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in the Detroit area. In 1964, he proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Quartermaster stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. During his time in the Navy, Doug played baseball and developed a lifelong passion for sports.
Following his service, Doug attended Michigan State University, earning a teaching degree and becoming an active member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He was honored to be a part of the MSU football and baseball teams, and later as an engaged alumnus. Doug served as President of the Downtown Coaches Club and was a board member of the Blue Line Club, reflecting his enduring dedication to Spartan athletics.
Doug enjoyed a successful career in sales, working in various industries throughout his life. His professional roles included positions as a travel agent with College, Waldo, and Brookfield Travel; an insurance representative with Allstate and AAA; and a forensic engineering representative with Nederveld.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Jocelyn "Jocy" (Miller) Smith; his daughter, Meredith Smith of Denver, Colorado; his son, Brian Smith and daughter-in-law Mary Smith of Portage, Michigan; and his cherished grandchildren, Harper and Gibson Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Greg Smith and sister-in-law, Betse Smith of Palm Harbor, Florida; his sister, Kathleen Kaczmarik of Southern California; and several nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Douglas and Caroline Smith of Pinellas, Florida.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Thursday, January 9, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home in East Lansing, 1730 E. Grand River Ave. East Lansing. A private burial will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery on Friday, January 10.
Doug will be remembered for his love of family, humor, and unwavering loyalty to Michigan State University. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
