

Elaine Karle, a long-time resident of East Lansing, passed away at Burcham Hills Retirement Community on Christmas Day, December 25, 2021 at age 77 after a series of health challenges during the past month. She is survived by her husband Jerry Schuur, a retired mathematics professor from Michigan State University, her sister Clarissa “Cris” Heil (Paul) of Midland, Michigan, and her sister-in-law Linda Karle of Highland, Michigan, her stepsons Peter Schuur (Sharon), Ted Schuur (Michelle) and Rob Schuur, seven nieces and nephews, and four grandchildren. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents Gene and Irene (née Stuve) Karle, and her brother Karl Karle. Family was very important to her.
Elaine was born on January 30, 1944 and grew up in Detroit and Highland Township, graduating from Milford High School and Michigan State University. Elaine spent her life teaching others, even after retiring from a full career with Waverly Public Schools. She was an avid reader who loved sharing her notes and discussing books in depth, especially with her book clubs. She loved traveling here and abroad and sharing her experiences with others. She had a deep appreciation for the arts and a passion for classical music. She and her husband attended many concerts and explored art museums together. She had true compassion for those in need and was inspired by strong, women leaders. Elaine enjoyed locally-sourced food and the farmers market, hiking, and taking neighborhood walks. She was active with St. John Catholic Church in East Lansing.
Due to the pandemic, there will be no visitation or funeral. A memorial service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Elaine may be made to St. John Food Cupboard (https://elcatholics.org/food-cupboard or 327 MAC Ave, East Lansing, MI 48823). Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home of East Lansing.
