“Panchita” age 85 of East Lansing, MI passed away Monday, March 28, 2011. She was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico on July 24, 1925 and raised in Crystal City, Texas. She married her childhood sweetheart, Efrain Marinez in 1944. Upon moving to Michigan in 1956 she was one of the founding families of the Cristo Rey Parish. She was a Catholic mother of 12 and devoted homemaker, if you walked in her house you were fed and given a haircut. She embodied the role of matriarch who supported her husband in the Comite Patriotico (Mexican Patriotic Committee). Always with a ready smile she was a lover of music, old movies and a hopeless romantic. She had great faith in God, the Virgin and humanity.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Efrain Portillo Marinez in 2010 and son Efrain Marinez in 1949. She is survived by 4 daughters; Guadalupe Marinez (Tom Izzo) Marina Marinez (Carl Szypula) Rebecca Marinez (Tom Pulick) Ana Marinez (Frank O’Donnell) and her 7 Sons; Juan Marinez, (Diana Sanchez) Rafael Marinez, Salome Marinez, (Dora Sanchez) Rodrigo Marinez, Rodolfo Marinez, (Beth Thomson) Guillermo Marinez, (Lauren Rudert) Roberto Marinez, (Mary Worden); 27 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and brother-in-law Theodoro (Blanca) Marinez, as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6PM to 8PM, rosary at 7PM with Rev. Frederick L. Thelen at Cristo Rey Catholic Church, 201 West Miller Road Lansing. The funeral mass will be 11AM Thursday March 31, 2011 with visitation one hour prior to the mass at Cristo Rey Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Marinez’s memory may be made to Cristo Rey Church Building Fund, Sparrow Hospital Cancer Unit, 1215 E Michigan Ave, Lansing MI 48912 or your favorite charity.
