

Age 87, passed away October 15, 2010. Born in Chico, CA in 1923 to Wilber and Ella Sommerfeldt; moved to Fowler, MI in 1931 attended grade school and graduated from Fowler High School. Glenn apprenticed as a tool and die maker at Ford Motor Corp. and then enlisted in the Marine Corp and fought in Guadalcanal. After WWII, he returned to Michigan and attended MSU School of Agriculture. As a county agent for the Agricultural Extension Service, he covered Michigan and developed lifelong friendships. His love of the Great Lakes, Michigan plants and wildlife was passed on to his daughters and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, skeet shooting and fishing. Glenn was always a Marine at heart, working with local VFW Posts organizing Marine Birthday party celebrations, etc.
His lifelong passion was learning, the Tao, world religions, philosophy and history. He is survived by his wife of 65 years and the love of his life, Alice Winans Sommerfeldt; daughters Karen S. (Jimmy) Barnhill, Winston-Salem, NC, Debbie Sommerfeldt-Neil, Holt; grandchildren Erin M. Neil (Spencer Green), Andrew M.W. (Deann) Neil; great-grandchildren Jayna, Mariah, and Carter.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 21, 12:00 at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, East Lansing with the Rev. Wm. J. Koenigsknecht officiating with visitation 1 hour prior. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Edward J. Werner VFW Post #3733, Fowler, MI, 48835 in memory of Glenn.
