Although Jason struggled early on in life, he showed remarkable courage and determination in his journey toward healing. In a powerful turning point, he chose to walk the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine (7 months), met so many wonderful people along the way that helped in his transformation, an experience that changed him deeply. When he returned, he was a renewed man, carrying with him strength, clarity, and a profound appreciation for life.
Over the last two years, Jason was truly a changed man. His family was blessed to have him back — to see his growth, to feel his love, and to witness the peace he worked so hard to find. Even though that time was far too short, it was a gift we will forever cherish.
Jason was a loving father to his beautiful daughters, Jayda Marie Olney (14) and Jozlyn Ann Olney (9), who were the light of his life and his greatest pride. He is survived by his loving parents, Gregory Carl (Julie) Olney and Donna Jo (Phillip) Finley; his grandparents, Judith Spratling, Beverly Olney, and Carl Olney; his stepbrother, Austin Finley; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family members; and his wonderful and loyal dog, Rebel, who was his constant companion.
Jason is preceded in death by his loving grandfather, William (Bill) Spratling, and uncle, David Spratling.
Jason’s life was not defined by his struggles, but by his resilience, his determination to change, and the love he held for his family. Those who knew him in recent years saw a man who had grown stronger, kinder, and more grounded. We are deeply grateful for the time we had with the man he became.
Though his life was tragically cut short, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him. We will remember his strength, his journey, and the hope he found.
Jason will be missed beyond measure and loved forever.
Funeral services will be held at Gorsline Runciman East Lansing Chapel, 1730 E. Grand River Ave. East Lansing, Michigan 48823, on Friday, February 27 at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until the time of the service.
