John Carlisle York

John Carlisle York passed away on January 26, 2026 at the age of 83. He was born on December 11, 1942 to Muriel (Barnes) and Carlisle (aka Buck) York in Lansing, MI. He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Simpson), who passed away in 2011. John attended Hope College and dedicated his career to working as a bank teller, credit union manager, and finished his career as an insurance salesman. Originally from Lansing, he moved first to Brighton, then to Okemos, MI.

John was a frequent teller of ‘dad jokes’. He was quiet, but had a dry sense of humor. He was a member of the Brighton Players Club and played on several softball teams during his time in Brighton. John was a big fan of MSU basketball. He was also a senior ‘gamer’, playing Skyrim and Diablo.

John is survived by his three children Chris York, Lisa York and Holly Bartman (Brent Bartman). He had the pleasure of watching his grandchildren grow up - Colwyn (Marrisa), Devyn (Gina), Owen, and Henry. John had the good fortune of having 4 great-grand children (Colwyn’s children - Austyn, Lucas and Bryce, Devyn’s child - Cadyn and his 5th great-grandchild Sarafina arriving soon!) John is survived by his step-sister Katherine Smith (Kachelski) and step-brother Kris York.

A private memorial service will be held by the family to honor John’s life.
