Juanita Daniel Cade passed away on May 13, 2023, after a brief illness. Mrs. Cade was born in Drew, Mississippi on February 3, 1930, to the union of Isaac and Abbie Daniel. She was the fifth of nine children. After graduating from high school she attended Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State University (now Tennessee State University) in Nashville, Tennessee, earning a degree in Education. During her undergraduate career she met and married Alex James Cade. After graduation she taught elementary school in Greenville and then Ruleville Mississippi for several years after graduation.
While her husband pursued further education in Indiana, she returned to Nashville to find work, ultimately working in a factory. The family relocated to Michigan in the mid-1950s where she began teaching at the elementary school level in the Lansing Public School System. Although she obtained her master’s degree in Home Economics and had planned to teach at the high school level, she discovered that both her passion and gifts were better suited to working with younger aged children. She also worked outside of the classroom setting in helping challenged students learn to read.
While at Michigan State University she joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and joined many of her sorority sisters working in the Lansing Michigan Public School System. She was a member of the teaching staff for more than 30 years at various schools. Mrs. Cade was a member of First Christian Church for many years and was active in her church choir. She is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Alex Cade; her parents, Isaac and Abbie Staples Daniel; her siblings, Edna Ruth Scott, Icy Mae Green, John Daniel, Jimmy Daniel, Naomi Winbush, Elmira Johnson, and Isaac Daniel Jr, and her grandson, Charles Columbus White III. She is survived by her sister, Freddie Simmons (Cortez Simmons); her children, Dr. Bonita Gail Cade (Dr. Charles White), Dr. Icy Alexyn Cade-Bell (Marvin Bell), and Mark Daniel Cade; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and her loving nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, May 26, 2023 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes East Chapel, 1730 East Grand River Ave, East Lansing, with visitation from 12:00 pm until the time of service. A committal service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the United Negro College Fund.
