Kenneth Malkowski

Born on January 4, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, Ken was the son of Edmond and Estelle Malkowski. He attended Austin High School and went on to earn his master’s degree in urban development and Planning from Wayne State University. In recognition of his lifetime of service, he was honored as a Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of Kentucky.

As a beloved public servant and devoted lifelong advocate for the youth, Ken dedicated his life to public service, beginning his career in his hometown of Detroit. One of his earliest and most meaningful contributions was teaching children and teens with disabilities how to swim at the Detroit Kronk Community Center - a role he never considered “work” because of the joy and purpose it gave him. He went on to serve on Mayor Jerome Cavanaugh’s Commission on Children and Youth, where he managed planning and administration for citywide youth programming.

Ken’s work helped shape major infrastructure in the city, most notably through his instrumental role in the creation and implementation of Detroit’s EMS ambulance program. This achievement ultimately led him to the Michigan State Government’s Office of Health and Medical Affairs. There, he led research and development on the training and certification of emergency medical personnel across the state. He concluded his 40-year career in public service with 15 years at the Michigan Department of Social Services, continuing his unwavering commitment to the well-being of others.

Ken married the love of his life, Marilyn, in 1963. Together, they shared 62 beautiful years of love and devotion to one another and the family they created. Ken had a passion for sailing, swimming, handball, and most of all, his family. He was also a proud member of numerous charitable and civic organizations, including the American Red Cross and the Knights of Columbus.

Ken is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn Malkowski; his sons, Duane Malkowski, Craig (Connie) Malkowski, and Bruce Malkowski; and his grandchildren, Victoria (Caleb) Pierce and Spencer Malkowski. He was preceded in death by his sister, Yvonne Bib, and his parents, Edmond and Estelle Malkowski.

In accordance with the family's wishes, please, no flowers. Instead, memorial contributions may be made to The Parkinson's Foundation; Hospice of Lansing; The Greater Lansing Food Bank; and St. Martha Parish.

A visitation for Ken will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the rosary being prayed at 7:30 PM, at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes East Chapel, 1730 E Grand River Ave., East Lansing, MI 48823. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at 11:00 AM, with a one-hour prior visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at St. Martha Parish, 1100 W Grand River Ave., Okemos, MI 48864, Father Michael Murray presiding.
