East Lansing
Malcolm Craig Johnson of East Lansing has completed his circle of life. Born February 10, 1946; died
February 9, 2015.
Mr. Johnson, who covered the Michigan Senate as well as the rest of state government for more than
30 years for the Associated Press, seemed to always have a dour expression, a sour demeanor and
was nicknamed "Mal-content," but in fact he had a quick wit, a ready laugh and was dedicated to his
work.
Known to his friends as Kim, he never gave in to the Multiple Sclerosis that plagued him for 36 years;
he first suspected something was wrong when he realized he couldn't feel his legs while he was cross
country skiing.
A native of Petoskey, he graduated from the University of Michigan, where he studied astronomy as
well as journalism.
He began his career in journalism in Macomb County. One day, after interviewing an official who said he could perform marriages, Mr. Johnson and his wife, Sandra Kusza, were married and then Mr. Johnson went to work on the night shift at the Detroit AP. But his professional work is known mostly at the Lansing bureau for the AP, where he covered the Senate, had extensive sources in the Department of Natural Resources, and covered Michigan State football and basketball games. When he retired in 2003, one of his few concessions to MS, the Senate read a resolution of tribute. He simply stood and raised his hands in thanks.
In retirement, he volunteered with the Capital Area Humane Society, and enjoyed his many loves: Formula 1 racing, mysteries, movies (especially Titanic), jazz, his dogs, the outdoors, chocolate, wine, collecting watches, dining out, creme brulee, Pepsi, his dogs and his friends. And oh yeah, his wife Sandra.
He is survived by his wife of more than 40 years, his dog Hoops, his sister Debby Reddick of Union Bridge, Maryland and niece Anne Hines. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Rick.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society. Neighbors, who are contributing to the CAHS, have also collected funds that will be used by the City of East Lansing to plant a tree in his memory at the Hidden River Park. Those who wish to contribute may contact Maggie Schuesler at [email protected]. A memorial dinner will be held at 2-5 pm Saturday, February 28 at Spagnuolo's Restaurant, 662 W.
Grand River Ave, Okemos.
Sandra expresses her deep gratitude to friends and neighbors for their many kindnesses, love and
support over the many years.
The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman East Lansing. On line condolences may be shared with the family at www.greastlansing.com.
