Manjit was born on December 19 in Dhotian, Punjab, India, as one of five children of Chanan Singh and Balwant Kaur (Dhillon) Gill. With impressive determination, Meena was able to graduate from the Amritsar College of Nursing and went on to achieve a commissioned officer rank of Captain in the Indian Army as a nurse.
During that time in a true story of love, Manjit met Virinder Singh Grewal, a Medical Officer with the rank of Major, and they soon married on January 12 of 1964. Their blessed union was a “love marriage”, which was very unusual during a time of arranged marriages. Before long, they welcomed their first child and immigrated to Lansing, MI, arriving with just $6.00.
Virinder worked at Sparrow as a surgeon while Meena, a young mother and no stranger to hard work, found ways to make extra money for their growing family. She completed her US nursing certifications and worked at St. Lawrence Hospital and then Lansing General Hospital, working in several areas, though primarily OBGYN. Perfectly in line with her nurturing nature, Meena delivered close to a thousand babies in the Lansing area.
Throughout her life, Meena has been known for her kindness, generosity, and acceptance of others; her Sikh faith has led her in the most beautiful and loving way. Emphasizing oneness and equality, her faith was in line with her honesty, service to others and holistic approach to life. Virinder and Meena were the first Sikh family in Lansing and also brought the first Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. She was also instrumental in legally sponsoring over a hundred immigrant family members to Michigan, which helped to make the Gill Family one of the largest Punjabi Sikh families in Michigan.
As the Grewal Family grew, so did Meena’s tenacity and ambition, and she added business owner to her many titles. She opened Meena’s Delights, Red Barn Catering and a Daycare.
Still, her proudest accomplishments were her family– mother of four children, Grandmother to thirteen and wife to the love of her life.
Meena’s favorite things to do included cooking and feeding others, and she had a life-long desire to open a restaurant that could feed those in need. No one could come over without being given the best cup of chai and something to eat that she made from scratch. The joy she felt from seeing someone enjoy her food was electric.
In addition, she had a magic touch for gardening, and a love of sewing and knitting. Meena also had a great understanding of holistic and natural healing, always having an old Indian remedy for all aches and pains. Perhaps her most significant interest was to stay fit and active, often calling the Michigan Athletic Club her “place of healing”. Many of her friends there knew her for her five minute plank, her love of yoga, zumba and pilates, and for the many hours of social time in the locker room cold plunges and hot tubs. Her 15 minute cold plunge was famous.
