A year ago today, I laughed with my brother for the last time. The following day, I received a call from my mom telling me that he had an accident. My brother died that following week. I consider myself so incredibly lucky to have been able to say goodbye to my brother at the hospital. so many people don't get the opportunity to say goodbye one last time to their loved ones the way I was able to say goodbye to Chewie. I was able to hug him, kiss him, hold his hand, tell him I loved him. I knew in his final moments on earth that he knew he was not alone, that he was loved so, so deeply. It gave me much comfort at the time and provided me with the courage to move forward. 
I would be lying if I said this year hasn't been difficult. At times I felt pain that is indescribable. I felt a hole in my heart that I never, ever thought could be filled again. I have felt anger towards God for taking my baby brother. 
My situation has been quite unique. About three weeks after my brother passed away, I found out I was carrying my daughter. With every ache my heart felt for the lost life of my brother, love for the new life growing inside of me filled me back up. My sweet baby girl. She has given me courage and strength that I didn't know I had in me. I look at her and I see everything that is beautiful in this world. I am also married to a man who is wonderful. He is an incredible spouse and an incredible father. I might be missing an important person now but I am very far from being alone. I know my brother made sure of this. 
I will never understand why my brother had to leave. Even now as I write this, it hurts me deeply. But I choose to love this day because it was my last day with Chewie. On this day last year, Jack and I picked my brother up and took him to a movie, it was some kind of spy movie and it was awful. We sat in the movie theatre, jack on one side, my brother on the other, and I held both of their hands. I whispered to my brother a few different times about how bored I was and he squeezed my hand and shushed me. I poked fun at Jack afterwards because he had chosen such a terrible movie, and my brother laughed. We went to eat at Spartan Hall of Fame Cafe,the three of us, and my brother ordered a burger, his favorite. He chuckled as I ordered chicken tenders because I always do. I sat back and beamed as they lovingly made fun of me together. I didn't mind. I felt nothing but happiness in my heart as I watched my two most important people enjoying each other, as I always knew they would. I hugged my brother and I told him I loved him, not once, but twice, and again once more through text message later that night. I watched him walk up to the front door and I watched him turn around and wave at me. I watched him close the door behind him. I got one very last day with my baby brother and because of that, I am blessed. I choose to remember this day as the last day I spent with my brother. My strong, muscular, handsome brother, laughing and smiling, not the boy hooked up to machines. I know by then he was already with God in heaven. I said goodbye to my brother on September 1st and his last words back to me were "I love you, Mere." I am lucky.
My brother died September 8th. Even so, he lives on forever through the Gift of Life. It's very comforting to know that as selfless as he was in life, he was also selfless in death. My brother is a true hero. I will be spending that day with my family. If you have a chance, please send some love to my parents. I lost my brother and it has been heart wrenching, but my parents lost their little boy and as a mom now myself, I can't even bear to think of the pain they must feel. If you are someone who has either one of my parents numbers, a message of encouragement/love would be so appreciated. And if not a message, prayers and loving thoughts are wonderful, too.
I was blessed to have my brother physically by my side for twenty years. He made me laugh harder than any person has ever been able to do and I could talk to him about anything. He was truly my best friend. my family is now blessed to have the most attentive, loving, caring guardian angel by our sides for the rest of our lives. My baby girl might not be able to meet her Uncle Chewie, but she will know him. She will know how hysterically funny he was. She will know how supportive and good he was. I have no doubt in this world that my daughter was a gift from not only God, but from my brother. I usually wouldn't share something so personal as this but I think it is so very important. Tell the people you love that you love them everyday. Hug them. Kiss them. Laugh with them. Be kind. Life is short.

Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. If only I could begin to put into words how much the loss of you has effected my life... it's something indescribable that I don't even understand. I think of your jokes and the silly nickname you had for me. And the random best friend texts I'd get from you. Sometimes I get mad at God for taking such an amazing person so early but I know that he has plans for us all. I know you'd want me to be happy, not angry. Losing you has really made me look at life differently and made me love everyone in my life more and reminded me to let them know how important they are to me all the time. If I could pick you up just one more time and just drive around my neighborhood for hours to talk just one more time I'd tell you how much you meant to me, how much you changed my life. I'd tell you how much you helped me through all the times I sat there and cried to you. I didn't tell you enough how much you impacted my life, and today I'm going to celebrate YOU, it's been a year without you, and I miss you so much. I love you chew

Chewie always had that smile and laughter along with his quick wit and sense of humor.
I really enjoyed the fortunate times I spent with him.
All the times we would be coming home from practices and trying to decide where to eat was a "hoot" and a half. 
Both he and Sean would just laugh at me and my suggestions....we would simplify it and hit "Pot Belly" until they refused to go there again. So much fun and so many laughs and great times.
What a delightful young man.
I was fortunate to have many great years with so many fine young men and Chewie was always a treat to be around. I enjoyed seeing so many of the young men and women at the service that he obviously touched over his time here.
It was an awesome service and a great turn out to pay their respects.

Everyday that goes by I think of you. If I could begin to put into words how much the loss of you has affected my life I would... It's something indescribable that I can't begin to understand.. I think of your jokes and the silly nickname you had for me. I think about what your dad recently shared with me about how you always thought so highly of me, not even knowing your dad yet having him automatically know who i was just by hearing my name really touched my heart. I listen to Tycho all the time now... even as I type this the song "A walk" is playing, the one you played for me in the car.. Losing you has really made me look at life differently and made me love everyone I have in my life more and reminded me to let them know how important they are to me all the time. Looking through texts of "hey best friend" "hey Limey " brings tears to my eyes but I'm happy to have been one of your best friends and to have held that honor. When I found this picture of my brother, it took my breath away. It's moments like now that I know my brother has found a peace, love, and happiness that is beyond my comprehension here on Earth in my physical body. Someday I will know this kind of beauty as I witness it by my brother's side once more in Heaven. I love you, Chewie. Until then...

We had planned to skate a few months ago, but never did. From that I've learned to take every opportunity given to me in life. That opportunity would have been to skate with a great friend one more time. We grew up together playing hockey our whole lives, and will never forget the many memories we shared. Like the time I left my baseball glove up at your cottage and was gloveless for my game the next night or kick the can with your dad and much more.  But we will skate again bro, I promise. RIP Chew

Recently my best friend lost her brother and the world lost a beautiful soul, but heaven gained an angel. It really puts into perspective what the petty things are in life, and what the important one's are. Hold your loved ones tight and never miss an opportunity to tell them you love them. Chewie, you truly were the most hilarious and random person I have ever met, every time I saw you I knew I was in for a good laugh. You had such a gentle and caring aura about you. Thank you for letting me constantly invade your personal space and creep on you without you ever getting THAT uncomfortable. And thank you for being such a great brother and rock for my sister, as I know you will continue to be. I love you so much, Meredith, and I cannot wait to squeeze you. Everyone, please continue to send the Lammers family your prayers. RIP Matthew Lammers.

I had to say goodbye to my very best friend. My brother was the strongest and most loving human being on this planet and as I picture my life without his love and support, hysterical humor, and bear hugs, my eyes are welling up with tears. I think I will miss his goofy faces most of all as they always made me crack up no matter what type of situation we might have been in. He was just so silly and so, so, so very sweet. I am so incredibly grateful for the twenty years I was able to spend with my beautiful baby brother and while I am terrified and so very, very sad to move forward without him, it is so comforting to know I now have the most special and loving guardian angel watching over me. Thank you so much to everyone who has sent their love and prayers over the past week. As horrible as this has been, I have come to the realization that I have the most amazing friends and family, far better than I ever realized and I honestly don't think I would have made it through this week without you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your support. My brother will live on in my heart forever and I will live my life everyday for him. I've been talking to Tori a lot lately and we both cant stop talking about you. All of my memories from middle school have you and the rest of the guys in them. I remember Tori and I would talk about you ALL the time back in the day. We would always want to be assigned next to your seat in class or be in line next to you for mass just so we could hold your hand during our father. You always seemed to be the one to lift us up even when we were down. Especially when we would all be in lunch detention together for the silliest things. Anyways Chewie, I still can't believe this is all so true. I wish I could have talked to you these past years, you were always an amazing friend. I miss those days in middle school and I am definitely going to miss you.

Chewie was just simply a hell of a kid to be around. Never a dull moment. 8 years in middle school was more than enough to judge what kind of man he would become and let me tell you it deeply saddens me to hear this news. Haven't spoken to him in years; he will no doubt live on in our memories!

Some of my best memories with Chew were never planned.  Most of them were just the two of us riding around town blaring music making each other laugh.  Many, many, many good nights were spent in the lammers basement either playing night crawlers or watching a scary movie.  He was one of a kind. Love you bud.

I remember in middle school always laughing with you and our inside jokes. When I transferred to Haslett I was happy to know you'd be there to be my friend. Your smile and ability to put smiles on everyone's faces was remarkable. I will love and miss you always. Chew rest easy and watch over us all.
