Matthew Rene Ortlieb of East Lansing passed away on April 16, 2026. Matthew was born in Lansing on March 28, 1985. He attended East Lansing High School and Michigan State University (BA 2008, MA 2011) and pursued a career as a digital media professional. He was employed in the past by Michigan State University’s College of Communications Arts and Sciences and by the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Matthew loved creating video art and possessed a rare and unmistakable artistic talent—one that left an impression everywhere he went. Matthew played basketball and football in high school and remained an active basketball player into adulthood. He developed a life-long attachment to Camp Hayo-Went-Ha, the State YMCA camp on Torch Lake, based on the many wonderful experiences he had as a camper and instructor.
Matt had a way of making an impact—through his art, his presence, and the energy he brought into every room. Funny, undeniably charming, and always ready to outwit you with a few well-chosen words. We will remember him for his light, his laughter, and, of course, his unforgettable shenanigans. He loved hard—and we loved him just as much.
Matthew is survived by his loving parents, Renee Ortlieb and Joe Petterson of East Lansing, and by his many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. A funeral service is planned for Saturday, April 25 at 1:00 at All Saints Episcopal Church in East Lansing. Following the funeral service, there will be a reception at All Saints Episcopal Church in East Lansing.
