

Mercedes Gamayo Llano passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan, at the age of 92. Born on August 21, 1932, in Zulueta, Cuba, Mercedes was the daughter of Jose Gamayo Fernandez and Ramona Morales Gonzalez.
On September 5, 1958, she married Gonzalo Llano in Havana, Cuba. In 1969, with a deep commitment to her family’s future, Mercedes made the courageous decision to emigrate to the United States with her young son. Despite not knowing English at the time, she settled in Lansing, Michigan, where she built a new life rooted in faith and perseverance.
Mercedes worked diligently as a custodian for 29 years before retiring at age 65. During this time, she proudly became a U.S. citizen on October 22, 1997. A devoted member of St. Mary Cathedral in Lansing for 56 years, her life was marked by unwavering faith and service to others.
She was instrumental in securing her son’s scholarship to Lansing Catholic Central High School, laying the foundation for his later graduation from Michigan State University—an achievement that reflected her enduring dedication to his success.
Mercedes is survived by her son, Gonzalo Llano; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Llano and grandson, Kyle Llano. She was preceded in death by her husband.
A private graveside service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Mercedes will be remembered for her generosity, faithfulness, selflessness, hard work, and independence. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
