Nancy Sheldon passed away peacefully on December 1, 2023 in East Lansing, Michigan where she resided for most of her life and raised her family. She passed in the presence of her husband (Peter) and her two sons (Peter Jr and Matthew). Nancy was born in Muskegon, Michigan on July 24, 1939.
Nancy was instrumental in so many people’s lives. Her overwhelming positivity and ability to connect with people in a meaningful way were her greatest gifts. Her influence on adolescents and teenage children shaped many, many lives and her impact was, in so many ways, awe-inspiring.
She attended the University of Colorado, the Free University of Berlin, and the University of Michigan where she earned her bachelor’s degree, followed by a masters degree from Michigan State University.
Nancy also had a major impact on the Lansing community. Just a few of the organizations she helped support, and in some cases lead, were Leslie and Charlotte High Schools (as a guidance counselor), the East Lansing School Board, the Junior League of Lansing, the YWCA, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Ingham County Bar Auxiliary.
Nancy is survived by her husband Peter of 58 years, her sons Peter Jr (Ruthellen) and Matthew (Amy), and her grandchildren Thomas, Jacob, Samuel and Sophie, as well as her sister Betsy (Walter), brother Tom, brother-in-law William (Judy), and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her father Stephen, mother Margaret, brothers James and Steve (Karen), and brother-in-law John.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the University Club in East Lansing from 2:00 - 5:00 PM - open to all who would like to celebrate Nancy’s life.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of the Burcham Hills and Careline (hospice) staff for the excellent care and comfort they provided Nancy over the last 16 months. Their unwavering support is something the family very much appreciated.
Most of all thanks to those of you who made Nancy’s life the incredible tapestry that it was and that we celebrate now.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation are encouraged to consider the Alzheimer’s Association of America and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Lansing. URLs are provided below.
