Ralph was born on January 2, 1941, to Florence and Donald Paul. He grew up in Chicago alongside his three brothers, James, Thomas, and Richard Paul, all of whom preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Leo High School in Chicago and Marquette University.
Ralph was the beloved husband of Barbara Paul, with whom he shared 49 wonderful years of marriage before her passing. Together, they built a loving family and raised four children. He is survived by his children and grandchildren: James Paul and his wife Jennifer, and their sons Ryan, Nicholas, and Jacob; Patricia (Paul) Buchert and her partner Scott Tanguay and her sons Thomas Buchert and Vincent Buchert; Julie (Paul) Paszczykowski and her husband Nathan, and their children AJ and William; and Bridget (Paul) Thorne and her husband Victor, and their children Vivian and Quinn. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Nora and Kathy, and many nieces, nephews, and their families, all of whom he cherished deeply. Ralph’s family was the center of his life and his greatest source of pride and joy.
Ralph enjoyed a long and successful career as a salesman with Central Steel & Wire, where he worked for over 40 years. In 1971, Ralph and Barbara relocated to the Lansing area, where they built a life rooted in family, faith, and community.
An accomplished athlete and lifelong sports enthusiast, Ralph was a devoted Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, later becoming an enthusiastic supporter of Michigan State University athletics. He loved spending time on the golf course and rarely missed an opportunity to follow his favorite teams and those teams connected to his children and grandchildren.
Ralph was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish for 54 years, generously giving his time in support of both the parish and its school. Following his retirement, he continued his commitment to serving others through many years of volunteer work with St. Vincent de Paul.
He also cherished his close friendships, especially his regular Monday morning coffee gatherings at Grand Traverse Pie and Wednesday lunches at the Mayfair, which brought him great joy over the years.
Ralph was such a gentleman—he loved people and carried a truly positive outlook on life, always greeting others with warmth, kindness, and a ready smile. He had a natural ability to make those around him feel valued and welcome, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was a genuine and devoted husband, father, friend, and neighbor, whose quiet strength and unwavering support were a constant source of comfort to those who knew him. Above all, Ralph loved God and his family. His strong faith, kind heart, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 11th at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish from 10:15 to 11:00 a.m., with a funeral Mass immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul of Lansing. Cards and condolences may be sent to James Paul at 4642 Graystone Dr., Holland, MI 49423.
