December 28, 1943 – May 20, 2025
Richard was born in Cleveland, OH and grew up in Franklin Village, MI. He received his Bachelor’s Degree and MBA from Michigan State University. Richard was a Registered Investment Advisor and Broker Dealer and was fanatical about the power of compound interest.
Dick spent his adult life in East Lansing and Harbor Springs, MI. He was an avid golfer and could be found on the course year-round if the temperature was above 40°. He often played 36 holes without a cart and ideally got the “twilight rate”. He was also a longtime member of the Michigan Athletic Club where he enjoyed playing racquetball, swimming, and of course the polar dip.
Dick loved bridge. He was also always up for a game of backgammon with his children and grandchildren, whom he wanted to play again if they won.
He enjoyed reading, including the dictionary, and spent many hours toward the end of his life at the East Lansing Public Library. He held Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger in high regard and often spoke of all of the financial and intellectual greats. Dick also held a deep appreciation for music and could be moved to tears by certain arias. He was a highly principled man, and set an incredible example for his children.
Dick was predeceased by his son Douglas Schubert. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn of 56 years, two daughters, Suzanne Oliva (John Oliva) Pound Ridge, NY; Deborah Krebs (Mitchell Krebs) Chicago, IL; and son, Stephen Schubert (Christina Schubert) Lake Forest, IL. Dick was grateful for his wife, their children and their spouses, and his 10 grandchildren who lovingly called him “Tiger”.
He is also survived by his sister, Judy Bodary, Cherry Hill, NJ, and brother Robert Schubert, Fort Lauderdale, FL and many other loved relatives.
A private family service will be held in the coming weeks. He will be missed by many.
