

Williamston
Born January 24, 1925 in Dansville, NY to Robert and Delia (Dentlinger) Schirmer, passed away October 16, 2014 at the age of 89. Robert attended Cornell University, received his DVM degree in 1946, and taught at Cornell for one year after graduation as an instructor of small animal sciences. Dr. Schirmer was a long-time faculty member in the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences and chair of the department from 1979 to 1987. A recipient of the college’s Distinguished Faculty Award in 1990, Dr. Schirmer was committed to the education of future veterinarians, and established the Robert G. Schirmer Post-Doctoral Fellowship to support students in either Large or Small Animal Clinical Sciences.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Schirmer. Surviving are children, Robert (Georgette), Timothy, Kurt (Debra), Suzann (Leo), and Richard (Jennifer); grandchildren, Megan (Jeremy), Margaret (Kenneth), James (Marcy), Michael, Alyse, Tyler, Casey, Allison and Nick and great-granddaughter Annabelle.
The funeral service will be held Friday, October 24, 2014, 10:00 a.m. at St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church, 4650 N. Meridian Road, Williamston, MI 48895, with The Very Rev. Ronald Byrd officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday, October 23, 5-7 p.m.
Contributions in memory of Robert may be made to Hospice of Lansing or the Robert G. Schirmer Post-Doctoral Fellowship.
