After a century spent caring for others, Ruth (Roelofje) Kramer (Sloot) passed into eternity on Thursday, February 22 in East Lansing. Born in Zaandam, The Netherlands, on September 18, 1917, she immigrated with her family to Zeeland, Michigan in 1954.
Her focus in life was her family; she modeled an appreciation for beauty through sewing, knitting, and cross stitching. At the same time, she put in practice a quiet determination and fearlessness. During WWII, her family resisted the Nazis and hid a Jewish boy in their home. She was opposed to war and violence and people who treat those things lightly.
Left behind, grateful to have had her as a mother and Oma, are her children and grandchildren: Dirk and Jean Kramer of Harriston, Ontario (Sarah, Nicholas, Derek, Sean, Patrick, Brian); Nick and Linda Kramer of Lakeside, Arizona (Duncan and Toby); Eleanor and Bill Verplank of Onekama (Peter and Julia); and Judy Kramer and Greg Steimel of East Lansing (Laura and Grant). Ruth was also blessed with 8 great-grandchildren. Having gone on ahead were her husband, Nicholas (1997) and daughter-in-law, Linda (1998).
A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 26 at 2:00 at Faith Reformed Church located at 220 W Central Ave, Zeeland, MI. Visitation will be the hour before.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bread for the World (Bread.org) or WorldWildLife.org.
The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Chapel, East Lansing, Mich.
