

Sherman was a proud 1964 graduate of Michigan State University, where he earned a master’s degree in physical education. His steady commitment to learning and to the values that shape a life well lived remained evident throughout the years.
Sherman had a 34-year football coaching career, which included coaching for his alma mater, Michigan State University, from 1969 through 1982. He then transitioned to the NFL, where he coached for the San Francisco 49ers from 1983-1991, served as the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers from 1992-1999, OC for the Minnesota Vikings from 2000-2001, and OC for the Detroit Lions from 2003-2004. He ended his career with the Washington Redskins as a consultant for the 2009 season.
While at MSU, he was named to the College Football All-America Team and finished third for the Heisman Trophy in 1963. During his Track career at MSU, he came in first place in the long jump at the Big Ten indoor championships for two consecutive years. He also served as captain of the MSU Football and Track teams.
Sherman was inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001. He also had three Super Bowl wins with the 49ers and one Super Bowl win with the Packers. Lastly, he was inducted to the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2014 and Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023.
Sherman was married for 61 years to his beloved wife, Toni. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Toni Lewis of Farmington Hills; brother Charles HOOK Lewis of Louisville, KY; son Kip (Lisa) Lewis of Scottsdale, AZ; son Eric (Elizabeth) Lewis of Annapolis, MD; former daughter-in-law Sara Harper Lewis of Haslett, MI; five grandchildren, O’lyvia, Taylor, Harper, Emerson, and Micah; and many nieces and nephews. Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bessie Lewis, his twin sister Shirlee Smith, Mary Virginia, Libby, and Jeanette.

Sherman was affiliated with St. John Lutheran Church of Farmington Hills, Michigan, a connection that reflected a life rooted in faith and community.
