Sue was born on December 28, 1932, to Kelso Ballantine Schultz and Mary Annette Humphrey Schultz in Normal, Illinois. Sue and her older brother, Charles Schultz were raised by their stepmother, Gladys (Gutel) Schultz, and their father, Kelso, in LeRoy, Illinois. She was an accomplished pianist, and during her high school years Sue competed in and won the State of Illinois piano competition. After Sue graduated from LeRoy High School in 1950, she attended Michigan State University (known at that time as Michigan Agricultural College) in East Lansing where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. During her Junior year, Sue met Frederick W. Fabian Jr. and they dated throughout their college years. After Sue graduated, they were married in 1954 in LeRoy, Illinois and then moved to East Lansing to start their family. Fred and Sue raised their four children there and were active members of Edgewood United Church in East Lansing.
Sue was a wonderful homemaker and volunteered for over fifty (50) years at Sparrow Hospital. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Sue played recreational tennis and golf up into her eighties, and most recently enjoyed playing Mah Jong with friends. Sue also enjoyed attending shows at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts.
Sue was the proud mother of four children: Mary Annette Fabian, Frederick (Suzanne) Fabian III, Royal Oak, MI; Denise (Robert) Campbell, East Lansing, MI; and Jeffrey (Mara) Fabian, Highlands Ranch, CO. She was beloved by her eight grandchildren: Kenneth (Andrea) Campbell; Jessica (Phillip) Kauk; Margaret (Scott) Rowley; Frederick Scott (Chase) Campbell; Stephen Fabian; Thomas Fabian; Katharine Fabian; and Sarah Fabian; her four great-grandchildren and one on the way, and other relatives and friends. Sue had excellent interpersonal skills and took great effort and pride in developing individual relationships with all her children and grandchildren. Up until her death, her children, and grandchildren each believed that they were her “favorite.” Sue has left behind a family legacy of faith, compassion, and love.
Sue was predeceased by her beloved husband Frederick; her daughter Mary Annette; her parents, Kelso Ballantine, and Mary Annette; her stepmother Gladys; and her brother Charles Schultz. Sue is survived by her sisters-in-law Marga (Schlamp) Schultz and Margaret (Fabian) Metzger.
