Thelma E. Van Epps, age 91, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan. She was born on April 25, 1934, in Owosso, Michigan, the beloved daughter of Velma and William Lyon, proprietors of the Lyon Poultry Farm in Owosso for many years.
Thelma was married to Gerald “Jerry” Van Epps, also of Owosso, who preceded her in death in 1980. Together, they built a life rooted in love, family, and service.
A dedicated volunteer, Thelma gave generously of her time to numerous organizations throughout her life, including Meals on Wheels, Special Olympics, the Critical Care Unit at Sparrow Hospital, Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home in East Lansing, and the Council for Blue Triangle Girls (Owosso YWCA). She also lent her warm energy and laughter to “A Catered Affaire,” the catering company of her son-in-law Doyle Kitchell, Jr., and his business partner, Keith Kallish.
Thelma remained close to her brothers—Max, William Jr., and Franklin—throughout her life; they preceded her in death, and she remembered them fondly.
A lifelong Methodist, Thelma taught Sunday School at the First Methodist Church of Owosso as a young woman and later in life attended churches in Owosso, Williamston, and East Lansing.
A caregiver in spirit and in practice, Thelma remained devoted to her friends and family, always keeping in touch with high school friends and supporting others in times of need.
She is survived by her loving children: Laura Bentley, Glenn Van Epps, Phyllis Kitchell, and Douglas Van Epps.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Lansing and The Indigo at Lansing memory care facility for their exceptional and compassionate care of Thelma.
Her wit, warmth, and unwavering love of people (and the wild animals in her yard) will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
