Thomas John Amiss passed away July 7, 2025. He was born September 5, 1939 to Beulah and Willard Amiss. Tom was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Avis (Gay) Skidmore and his brother, Terry (Trish) Amiss. Tom married Melanie Powell and they had three children, Heidi, John and Matt.
Later, he was married to Christine Snyder. Still later, he married Mary Ellen Sheets, a friend from his teens.
Tom graduated from East Lansing High School (Class of '57) - the first class to graduate from the 'new' high school on Burcham Drive. He joined the Marines and trained in San Diego. He attended MSU. Tom loved cars and was in the car business most of his life, working at Dick Watson Chevrolet, Bud Kouts Chevrolet and finally spending 22 years at Williams Auto World selling high-end German cars. When Tom left Williams, he started hauling cars out of state in an enclosed trailer at Amiss Motor Transport. Lastly, he did graphic design for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK. He always drove a 'hot' car and was dressed to the nines, thanks to Kositchek's Menswear.
Tom ran 16 marathons beginning when he was 40 years old. He also went to Tiger's Opening Day for 26 years, come snow, sleet, rain or shine.
Tom & Mary Ellen were together 36 years, traveling the world (even though he was a white knuckled flyer). They had homes, boats and many friends in Canada, Florida and Michigan. He always prided himself in being a home town boy. East Lansing was always in his heart. Of course, Tom 'bled' green, as any Spartan fan would. He loved his little Yorkies, Pee, Wee & Mini.
Tom is survived by his children, John, Heidi (Orrin) Cross, Matt and grandson, Jack Cross. Also his stepchildren, Melanie (Noel) Bergeron, Brig (Francine) Sorber, Jon (Jennifer) Sorber, their children and grandchildren. They all loved him very much.
The family is so grateful for the kind care he received from the caregivers his last 7 months at Burcham Hills. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Bill and Norma Sheathelm and Bill and Cindy Wilhelm, who were so helpful at the end of this long journey. There will be no services. If you wish, donations to Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 W Grand River Ave, Lansing, MI 48906 would be appreciated.
