Dr. Walter "Wally" Baird of East Lansing, passed away on Sunday, June 4th, at the age of 89. Wally was born in Traverse City, Michigan on September 5, 1933, the son of Melvin and Ruth (Green) Baird. After graduation from Traverse City High School in 1951, he went on to the University of Michigan, completing medical school in 1958. Following residency, which included teaching both Pharmacology and Cardiology at U of M, Wally, went on to practice in Lansing, joining first the Green Lawn Medical Group then becoming a founding member of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute of Mid-Michigan from which he retired in 1996. Through the years he was an active member of numerous medical societies including The American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, The American College of Cardiology and The American Heart Association.
A man of deep faith, Wally was a founding member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor and for 54 years, a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in East Lansing.
While at U of M, Walter met and married his wife, Marilyn. Through the years they were blessed with 5 children. The family enjoyed camping and travel throughout Michigan and around the country, as well as vacations at their northern Michigan cottage. Wally and Marilyn traveled extensively in Mexico and Central America as well as Europe and China. Through the International Center at MSU, the family was extended with the many international students they befriended.
Walter is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marilyn (Brautigam) Baird and their children, Anne Baird and her husband John Guenther, Wayne and Kristin (Wright) Baird, Gloria Carpenter, James and Suzanne (Lorenz) Baird, Brian and Jennifer (Andersen) Baird, brother-in-law Jack Brautigam and special family friend, Zhi Xia Wu, 14 grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son in law, Hans Cozak, and great-grandson, James Baird III.
There will be a visitation beginning June 17, at 10AM followed at 11AM by the funeral service then a light lunch, all at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2780 Haslett Rd, East Lansing MI 48823.

Walter, loving husband, father, grand-father, healer, teacher and world traveler has been called home by his savior and now begins the next great adventure.
