Walter was always so helpful as Joe and I learned all the complications with sailing.   He was knowledgable about all the ways to keep safe and helped so many new sailors be comfortable and safe on the water.  Thanks, Walter!

I miss Walter immensely.  He had a gift with clocks.  I met him in the 1990s when I took my 150 year old French farm clock to him for repairs.  I was referred him by a clock friend in New Jersey.

Walter was wonderful.  He took such great care of my clock and got it working well again.

A few years later, after my father died in 2002, I sold him my father's gold Rolex.  I hope that one of his sons now wears that watch.  I told Walter that I would only sell it to him if he promised to wear it.

Just like my sister Femmy Stevens  I would like to offer my condolences to my uncle Wally,oom Wout.Femmy's memories about my uncle are for me the same;
a warm,generous en warm man.
The last time I saw him was in Schoonhoven.
My mother Dinie  de Gruyter (his sister) and me visited him there.
He was staying there with his son Mike and daughter Margaret.
It was a day full of laugh and love.
That was 6 years ago.
May he rest in peace.

Verdrietig dat Wout is overleden. Hij was voor ons een vrolijke en gezellige oom. We denken met plezier terug aan de keren dat we bij hem en Riet waren in Hasslett bij Lake Lansing en de leuke tripjes die we met hen maakten naar Las Vegas, Muskegon, Grand Rapids en Niagara Falls.
Bij zijn bezoekjes aan Nederland logeerde hij vaak bij ons in Schoonhoven en genoot hij er van om weer terug te zijn in zijn geboortestad.
Hij was de laatst levende broer van mijn vader Cor de Gruijter en gaf mij soms het gevoel dat hij mijn tweede vader was.
Jammer dat dat allemaal voorbij is, maar de fijne en warme herinneringen zullen blijven!

I remember Walter so fondly.   We had just joined the Lansing Sailing Club when we  (husband Joe and myself) met Walter.   He was so welcoming and helpful as we learned how to sail a 19 ft. Lightning.   He and Rita made us feel at home at the Sailing Club.  He always had a hearty laugh and knew so much about sailing.   He enjoyed himself and made everyone around him enjoy themselves.  Rita also was so enjoyable and full of laughter.  Walter will be missed greatly.    Sue Rabidoux

Our years at Dye WCP made a friendship and business fun.  Walt fixed my clock purchases, gave me reassurances on purchases, and helped me understand the internal workings of clocks and BWL.  Walt fixed the State Capital clock when no one else could. He handmade parts for instrumentation that had outlived repair men.   Walt had the greatest gift of kindness, Rita had a heart as big as the world.  Those two were the longest happiest couple I've ever known, and gave me an open door to visit anytime.  Rita and Walt were the best  - and will be always a reminder of what faith can give you.

Walter was always so welcoming as Joe and I joined the Lansing Sailing Club.   We had just bought a small sailboat and knew very little about sailing.   He took us under his wing and helped us so much in learning about the intricacies of sailing a 19 ft. sailboat.  He always had such a great humor about everything and kept sailing lively and fun.  Rita was also very helpful and her laugh was uplifting.  Walter added so much to all the lives that he touched.  Sue Rabidoux

Walt and Rita were a highlight of a water exercise group at Haslett High School my husband and I attended a few years ago. We were in our 70's and Walt was lots of fun to talk to about life...politics, local events, people. Rita was lively at the time too. I remember they loved to dance and went sometimes to the Spiral in old town. Such wonderful members of our Haslett community 

I would like to offer my condolences to my cousins Wally, Micheal and Margaret.
Uncle Wally (oom Wout) was the youngest brother of my mother Dinie de Gruyter. He came to Holland quite often to visit the relatives in Schoonhoven and on antique watches business.
I will remember him as a generous, hospitable, good humoured and kind man.
He was the last person of the De Gruyter family from my mother's generation. May he rest in peace.

Our sympathies go out to Walter's whole family. Both he and Rita were cherished friends. Being friends initially from the watch and clock club, we became personal friends. We will cherish our memories of pontoon rides, dinners together, watch meetings, auctions, and  lots of laughter. GOD bless Walter and Rita. They are together again.
