Owens (deceased in 2006) in 1948 and the couple migrated first to Ohio and then to Illinois, ultimately welcoming nine children into their lives. A prolific craftswoman, she enjoyed needlepoint, knitting and crocheting. Reading and music were also central to her life. She sang and played the organ in various church choirs for much of her adult life.
