Born on January 1, 1938, in Maryville, Tennessee, to the late A.J. and Bessie Stanbery, Charlie was a proud graduate of Porter High School and Tennessee Wesleyan College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music.
Throughout his life, Charlie used his many talents to serve and inspire others. A man of quiet humility and boundless capability, he could fix or create just about anything. His life reflected dedication: to his family, his community, his craft, and his faith.
A devoted member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, Charlie’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. His deep commitment to the church and its music ministry enriched countless lives over the years.
Music was not just a part of Charlie’s life—it was his passion and calling. Among his many accomplishments, he served as Director of the Choo Choo Chorus, and he was also a proud member of the Sum-R-Fun Quartet. His love of harmony—both musical and spiritual—defined him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Ted Stanbery.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 37 years, Teresa Stanbery; sons, Shane (Wendy) Stanbery and James (Lori Vaughn) Dougan; daughter, Marian Backus; grandchildren, Cody (Renia) Wilson, Garrett and Jake Stanbery, and Caiden Kirby; great-granddaughter, Zara Wilson; sister, Gracie Hows; several cousins; and a wide circle of dear friends who will remember him fondly.
A memorial service celebrating Charlie’s life will be held at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 2:30 p.m. prior to the service.
