

Charlotte George Dunbar, 91, died March 3, 2012 in Galax, Virginia, where she had lived with her son since 2010. She was a resident of St. Elmo from birth until 2003 when she moved to Maryland to live with family members there. She was a 1938 graduate of Chattanooga High School. She was a member of St. Elmo United Methodist Church, including the Fellowship Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women and, for over 50 years, the Chancel Choir. In the 1960s she served as a Gray Lady at Erlanger Hospital.
She was preceded in death by Rowland H. Dunbar, her husband of 65 years; her sons, the Rev. Ronald G. Dunbar and the Rev. George R. Dunbar; her sister, Jean Shelton; and her brother, Lyle Dowbiggin. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Dr. Dwight A. and Jane O. Dunbar of Galax, VA; grandchildren Mary Dunbar (Hickory, NC), Dr. Cheryl D. Warren (Baltimore, MD), Kerrin D. Hightower (Hattiesburg, MS), Lea-ann Dunbar-Bergius (Munich, Germany), Alan D. Dunbar (Winona, MN) and Ronald S. Dunbar (Missoula, MT); daughters-in-law Joy W. Dunbar of Pikesville, MD, and Lee H. Dunbar of Jasper, GA; sister-in-law Doris Dowbiggin of Oak Ridge, TN; and brother-in-law Dr. J. Paul Shelton of Atlanta. Thirteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive her.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 10, at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel with the Rev. Roy Howard officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
