Darby Marable Smart

Mrs. Smart was the daughter of the late Thomas Michael and Emma Lee O’Connor. She was born September 22, 1939. She was a 1957 graduate of Tyner High School and she received a M.S. degree in Education from Middle Tennessee State University in 1969. Darby taught biology at Chattanooga Central High School for 16 years. She was a member of East Brainerd Church of Christ, the Embroiderers’ Guild of America (Chattanooga Chapter) and Kappa Kappa Iota Teachers’ Sorority. She received the Tennessee Academy of Science Distinguished Teacher Award in 1975.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter William Smart and grandson, Tyler Smart.

Surviving are her daughter Melinda (Mickey) Spence; sons, Mike (Leslie) Marable, Brian Smart and Gary Smart; brother, Pat (Liz) O’Connor; grandsons, Drew and Dallas Marable, Jesse Smart and Michael Spence.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 – 7 PM on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist-East Chapel, 404 South Moore Road, East Ridge, Tennessee 37412..

A celebration of life service officiated by Senior Pastor Bill Owens of GraceWorks Church will be held on Friday August 19, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Burial will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Chattanooga Alzheimer’s Association 7625 Hamilton Park Drive #22 Chattanooga, Tennessee 37421 (alz.org) or Hearth Hospice 1800 Rossville Ave Suite 7 Chattanooga, Tennessee 37408.

The family would like to thank Brett Billings with Foresight, the staff at Hearth Hospice and the staff at The Lantern at Morning Pointe for the love and care they showed to mom during her illness.
