George Wesley Lackey, 99, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away on March 28, 2026. Born in Jackson, Tennessee, on January 6, 1927, George was a hard-working, wise, compassionate, gentle, kind-hearted, and resilient man whose steady presence will be deeply missed.
George worked for Chattanooga Glass for over 30 years, retiring as a Quality Control Inspector—a role that suited his careful nature and dependable work ethic.
On April 16, 1948, George married Ruthie Pendergrass Lackey. They shared 64 years of marriage before Ruthie’s passing in 2012. George was devoted to his family, loving them deeply—especially his children and grandchildren—and in the years when Ruthie became bedridden, he faithfully cared for her for many years until her death.
George is survived by his two sons, Melvin Lackey and Anthony Lackey (Sherie); his daughter, Wanda Gann; his sister, Linda Phillips (Coy); 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ruthie; his son, Wayne Lackey and eight siblings: brothers Grady, Dewey, and Edgar; and sisters Opal, Alene, Thelma June, Christine, and Lucille.
In his quieter joys, George loved going to the flea market and trading pocketknives and coins. He also enjoyed fishing—simple pleasures that brought him contentment and good stories to share.
George attended 4th Ave Church of God and Spring Creek Church of God.
A Celebration of George's Life will be held in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Wednesday April 1, 2026, at 2pm with Bishop Daniel Beard officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5-7 pm and again on Wednesday prior to the service beginning at 12pm. He will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife, Ruthie in the Lakewood Memory Gardens East.
The family would like to say a special thank you to all the caregivers and staff of Amedisys Hospice, especially Wanda Cochran.
