Harry “Butch” Barnes, 77, died at home in Cleveland, Tennessee with his wife Shelli by his side Sunday 12/1/19 He was a paramedic/firefighter and founder of Hamilton Co STARS and the Tri-State CISM Team/PAR Foundation. He is survived by his wife, Shelli Barnes; his son, Chris Barnes, daughter, April Barnes Stafford (Doug) and grandchildren, Samantha; Sarah; Christopher II; Joshua Taylor; and a brother, John R Barnes III. A Celebration of Butch’s Life will be held on Tuesday December 10, 2019 in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest in the Forest Hills Cemetery in St. Elmo. Arrangements are under the care of Chattanooga Funeral Home Crematory and Florist East Chapel, 404 South Moore Rd. East Ridge, TN 37412. Biographie

He was one of the first paramedics in the state and nation. Butch was a sworn law enforcement officer and member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He attended Baylor School on a football scholarship, but after a serious knee injury, he graduated from City High School in Chattanooga. He was a founding member of Hamilton County Special Tactics and Rescue (STARS), the Tri-State Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team, and the Preparation Assessment and Response (PAR) Foundation. He was a responder to the 9/11 terrorist attack in NYC for a week beginning on 9/12 where he assisted both Fortune 5 businesses and local emergency responders. He responded to the Tri-State Crematory Event in Noble, GA for 4 months by initiating the Incident Command System (ICS) to organize the CISM response and worked with both local volunteer fire personnel and Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents. He was instrumental in designing and training GBI agents on conducting forensic interviews to gather information about prosthetic devises to aid in remains identification. He also responded to various local incidents including airplane crashes and other aviation related incidents in his role as TN CISM Officer for Civil Air Patrol, Auxiliary of the US Air Force. He and Shelli enjoyed dressing in historical vintage clothing and reenacting with the River Chase Posse
as well as hosting karaoke events at various venues.
He is survived by his wife, Shelli Barnes; his son, Chris Barñes, daughter, April Barnes Stafford (Doug) and grandchildren, Samantha; Sarah; Christopher II; Joshua Taylor; and a brother, John R Barnes III.
