

She was the daughter of the late Charles and Vera Robbs. She attended Temple Baptist Church.
Joyce was a loving mother and Nanny to her family, was an exceptional cook and loved nothing more than family get-togethers. She had an unending love of music and particularly loved listening to the Gaither’s with her husband every Sunday. Joyce never missed an athletic event or extracurricular activities of her children or grandchildren. One of her greatest joys was traveling the country with her husband and grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James Charlton Sloan, Sr.; her brothers, Jack (Sophie) Robbs, Eugene (Eileen) Robbs, William (Harvey) Robbs, Lee Robbs, and Ronnie (Rhoda) Robbs; her sisters, Christine Hedrick and Lonita (E.K.) Wood.
Survivors include four sons, James C. Sloan Jr. (Melissa), Cloudland, Georgia; Kenny Sloan, East Ridge; Keith Sloan (Karen) East Ridge; and Terry Sloan (Diane) Ooltewah; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Ryan, Hayden (son of Renee’), Kyle and Rachel Sloan; three great-granddaughters, Sara Sloan, Sammie Sloan, and Kyla Sloan; step-granddaughter, Lynde (Russell) Thompson; three step-great-granddaughters, Masen, Rowan and Parker Thompson; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, 2023. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 16, at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
