Martha Gracy Swasey

She was founder and Director of Signal School of Physical Education and a Senior Olympian. She had also been Director of Women’s Athletics at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee; Associate Physical Director, Central YMCA, Chattanooga; Associate Professor, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga; Health and Physical Education teacher, Oak Ridge High School, Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Special Physical Education teacher, Woodland Elementary School, Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Assistant Professor,Duke University, Durham, North Carolina; and Chairman of Physical Education Department, Tennessee College for Women, Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan V. Swasey.

Survivors include her sister, Dorothy MaCaulay of Athens, Georgia; son, Allan V. Swasey, Jr., Reston, Virginia; daughters, Patricia Jordan, Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Dorothy Brewer, Chattanooga, Tennessee; grandsons, Jim Jordan III, Matthew Swasey, and Ryan Smith; granddaughters, Jackie Jordan Pullen, Chelsea Huddleston, and Erin Swasey.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Janice Mynchenberg officiating.

The family will receive friends in Chattanooga Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist,404 South Moore Road, Chattanooga, Tennessee.
