Served in the US Army as a Military Police Soldier and served 2 tours in Vietnam. He worked for the Chattanooga Police Department for 13 years and then later retired from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of Knights of Columbus council 610 and later council 6099. Mr. Mathis was a member of the First united Methodist Church of Tullahoma.
Bill was passionate about spending time with family, hunting, fishing, camping, storytelling and history.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy Mathis; children, William Christian Mathis, David Blaine Mathis, Byron Patrick Mathis, Autumn Gretchen Mathis Scealf, Tiffany Gail Mathis, Amber Brittany Mathis and Anthony Wilson Mathis; mother, Shirley Anne Mathis; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Monday, June 29, 2015 at 1:30 pm at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Reverend Brent Baughman officiating.
The family will receive friends at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home from 2-7 Sunday and from 11:30 -1 Monday.
