

She was born in East Stroudsburg, Pa. the daughter of Dr. Thomas Breitwieser and Anita Van Vliet Breitwieser. She attended schools in East Stroudsburg and graduated from East Stroudsburg High School in 1936.
She attended Penn State University and graduated in pre medicine in 1940.
Ruth attended the University of Pennsylvania Medical School graduating with a degree in medicine in 1943. She earned her a board certification in Internal Medicine in 1947.
She then worked at Wellesley College in MA; as a physician in their student health services for 16 years.
Her summers were spent traveling and she worked for the National Health Service in Washington, D.C. also. After this she was on the staff of the University of Pennsylvania as a Physician in their Student Health Service. In Philadelphia
Ruth is survived by Roger A. Dunning formally of Stroudsburg and now Kirkland Village in Bethlehem, PA; and a stepson, Richard of East Nassau, New York;
She continued to practice in the area and was on the auxiliary staff of Pocono Hospital.
Ruth also worked for the State of Pennsylvania as a physician with the “well Baby” Clinic in Stroudsburg and was a school physician for the Pleasant Valley School District.
Ruth was active in the Pocono Medical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Jacob Stroud Chapter and The Monroe County Historical Association. And served on the Board of Directors of Northeastern Bank of Pennsylvania in Scranton, PA;
She was a lifelong member of The East Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church.
Ruth had a keen interest in local history and the VanVliet family and co-authored 2 books.
She was interested in helping young students in need complete their educations. She established Endowments and scholarships in several colleges and Universities.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday September 6, 2012 at 2:00P.M. in the East Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church., 55 Smith Street, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301 with Rev Samuel Hofford and Rev. Edmund Freeborn, officiating. Interment will follow in Prospect Cemetery, Prospect Street, East Stroudsburg, PA;.
A gathering for family and friends will be held at the East Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service.
A memorial service will also be held at Kirkland Village in Bethlehem at a later date.
