
He was born in Newton, NJ on March 14, 1951 a son of Marion (Lauer) Johns of Florida and the late Harry Johns. Michael graduated from Stroudsburg High School class of 1971 and attended North Hampton Community College, Bethlehem. Mike was employed as a Human Resources Assistant at the Monroe County Court House, Stroudsburg.
Michael also served in the PA Army National Guard as member of Company C, 1/109th Mechanical Infantry of the 55th Brigade, 28th Division. During his enlistment there occurred the Truckers’ Strike on PA Highways, beginning February 1974; Company C East Stroudsburg was activated as a unit to operate with the PA State Police under Task Force 55of Operation Safeway in Northeast PA. Michael was involved in guarding bridges and overpasses to assist in safe passage of motor vehicles on state highways during this civil disturbance. He was a member of the “Rapid Reaction” Platoon of the “Riot Squad” at Company C. He along with others were tasked with providing “force” protection for PA Governor Milton Shapp during his visits to the Northeast Highways near Bartonsville, PA a the former truck stop. Michael completed his National Guard obligation with honorable discharge and state service ribbon for his military operation which lasted one week.
Michael was a member of St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church of Stroudsburg, and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren; they were the love of his life.
Preceding him in death in addition to his father was a sister Deborah Johns.
Surviving in addition to his mother is his wife of 39 years the former Deborah Schick of Stroudsburg. 2 daughters Jennifer Block and her husband Philip and Maggie Johns both of Stroudsburg, 3 brothers Barry Johns and his wife Shirley of Florida, Elmer Lusk and his wife Marylou of East Stroudsburg, and Andy John of Pennsylvania 3 grandchildren Canaan, Tucker, and Delaney Block. Many nieces and nephews and his loving dogs also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Monday August 8, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 27 Washington Street East Stroudsburg, with his pastor Rev Gail Kees officiating. Interment will follow in Stroudsburg Cemetery, Stroudsburg.
Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Monday at 11:00 A.M. till the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his grandkids education trust fund Maggie Johns as trustee, at the Tobyhanna Army Depot Federal Credit Union, in East Stroudsburg.
