She was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma, on July 3, 1936, to Ralph and Maude (Davidson) Hedrick. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to the small town of Colombia, Oklahoma, until 1939. At that time, they moved to the farm, which was 6 miles west and 1 mile north of Crescent, Oklahoma. Betty’s family life was centered around work on the farm. They made their home in Edmond, Oklahoma, raising their four children: James Jr., Rita, Harold, and David. While taking care of her family, she also worked outside the home as a clerk. When her husband James retired from the Edmond Fire Department in 1977, they moved to Stratford, Oklahoma. During their time at Stratford, Betty attended a revival at Galey Baptist Church, where she asked Christ to be her Savior.
James and Betty lived on their farm until his death in 1989. At that time, Betty moved back to Edmond, where she enjoyed time reading her many books, working in her garden, caring for the backyard birds, and watching college sports along with Thunder basketball.
