He grew up on the family ranch helping with the cattle and other chores. Don excelled in both academics and athletics, especially football. He loved playing football!
After graduating high school, Don attended college at East Central University where he played football on a four-year scholarship. Don’s most notable achievement during his time in Ada was meeting Sarah Haugen, the love of his life. They married September 20, 1958. After college, Don worked as a chemist for two years for Ideal Cement in Superior, Nebraska before deciding to attend dental school in Kansas City, Missouri.
In 1964, Don and Sarah chose Edmond to raise their family and establish his dental practice. They have always been thankful and grateful for that decision and truly love the town, the people, and the community, especially St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. When you think of longtime Edmond dentists, you think of Dr. Courts. He served his community for more than 40 years supported by his amazing staff: a true team!
The Courts family spent summers at Lake Hiawassee, about 15 minutes from Edmond, where they enjoyed friends, fun, and lots of good BBQ, especially Don’s famous ribs. All the children had their bags packed on the last day of school to head out to the lake cabin for the summer. Wonderful family memories that have lasted a lifetime!
In Don’s free time, he could be found playing tennis or golf. He and Sarah moved to Oak Tree in the 1980s where they quickly became regulars at the sports center each morning surrounded by friends having coffee and reading the newspaper after a hard workout.
Don’s love of Oklahoma football was no secret. He and Sarah spent many a Saturday in Norman at the football games. As he grew older, he enjoyed watching the games with his family and proudly wearing all of his OU Sooner gear.
Don passed on June 20, 2021 at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife Sarah and his loving family; daughters Kathy Bookhout and husband Jim, Laura Fisher and husband Scott; son David and wife Jenny; grandchildren Court and Jeff Bookhout and their spouses Nicole and Renee, Sarah Beth and Katie Fisher, and Jack Ricky Courts and Rachel Fry and husband Chase; three step grandchildren Devin, Hannah and Mackenzie; two sisters Alice Courts and Tandy Whitacker and husband Mark; several nieces and a nephew; and extended family and many friends.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday, June 24th, 2021 at Touchmark at Coffee Creek, 2801 Shortgrass Road in Edmond.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Don Courts’ name to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Edmond.
