Leta Carey Burkett

Leta Carey Weaver Burkett was born March 10, 1914 and ended her earthly journey on March 27, 2014 at the age of 100 years and 17 days at her home at Jefferson’s Garden Assisted Living. She was born near Maysville, OK to Cordis and Clemmie Weaver, the 4th of 5 children. Leta attended college at Central State College majoring in art. She met Francis Burkett at a church picnic and they were married in 1935. The were married for over 60 years. Leta was a talented seamstress and decorator and had a long time career in retail sales, mostly selling furniture and decorating accessories. She and Francis lived in Oklahoma City, Edmond, Salem, Ill, St. Louis, MO, Atlanta, GA and after their retirement moved back to Oklahoma. They built their dream home near Oklahoma Christian University and she loved making it beautiful. She lived there until Francis died in 1996. Leta loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Memorial Road Church of Christ. Leta’s family were her delight. She loved having all the family together and had many family celebrations in her home. Her last celebration was on Saturday, March 22nd when her friends and family gathered to celebrate her 100th birthday which she had eagerly awaited. Leta was preceded in death by her parents, her 4 siblings, her son-in-law, John Lutes, two nieces and a nephew. She is survived by her children, Gerald Burkett and wife Carolyn of Nashville, TN, Beverly Grove and husband James of Moore, OK and Nancy Lutes of Oklahoma City, OK; seven grandchildren Lori Stovall and husband Jesse of Altus, OK, Lisa Bryen and husband Gary of Moore, OK, Debora Nutt and husband Kevin of Norcross, GA, Cherie Wallace and husband David of Erie, CO, Tim Grove and wife Cheryl of Euless, TX, Mark Lutes and wife Jennifer of Prosper, TX and Jennifer Cherry and husband Justin of Auckland, New Zealand. She is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, sister-in-law Genevieve Weaver, two nieces and a host of friends and relatives. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Baggerley Funeral Home from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Baggerley Funeral Home Chapel.
