Robin Gaston passed away on June 12, 2023 at the age of 86. Robin battled serious medical conditions in recent years and he faced those challenges with courage and humor and stayed strong to the end.
Robin was raised on the farm near Lamont, Oklahoma by his parents, Bird and Marie Gaston and his grandparents. Robin often spoke fondly about the time he spent with his grandfather, Fred Muegge. He inherited a love of the land and farming from his family. Every year after harvest, Robin would call all the farmers around Lamont to find out how many bushels of wheat the crops had yielded.
He attended Oklahoma State University and played freshman basketball under Henry Iba. He soon realized that he would never be a starter on the Varsity team because he did not have the skills or talent of his teammate Eddie Sutton. Because he loved the game, he convinced Coach Iba to let him work as one of the assistant coaches for the freshman basketball team.
Following graduation from OSU, Robin purchased a trailer and moved to Kemmerer, Wyoming to take his first teaching and basketball coaching position. He chose this area so that he could enjoy the outdoor life of fishing and hunting. He returned to the University of Oklahoma to pursue his Masters degree in Guidance and Counseling. His first position in Oklahoma City Public Schools was as a Special Education teacher and Counselor at Jefferson Junior High School. His formidable leadership abilities were soon recognized and he was assigned as principal at Harding Junior High School. Robin was a fierce advocate for his faculty, staff, students and fellow administrators. After one year at Harding, he was assigned as principal of John Marshall High School-at the time, the largest high school in the state. During his career, he served as principal of Northeast High School, Northwest Classen High School, and Southeast High School.
Following his retirement, Robin dabbled in real estate, and pursued his passion for fishing, golfing, weekly poker games, and coffee with the Edmond boys. Two of his favorite activities were spending time with family and friends at the house on Lake Tenkiller, and traveling to Vickers’s Ranch to spend the month of August in Lake City, Colorado surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains.
Robin is survived by his wife of 32 years, Roberta, his son Todd Gaston, his step-sons Mike Sughru and wife Christy, and Jeff Sughru. Robin was Papa to Taylor Haig, Aubrey Young and Melanie Gaston. He was known as “Big Bob” to Sophia Sughru and Sam Sughru. He is also survived by his precious great-grandson, Oliver Haig.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Robin’s name to the Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation.
A special thanks to the caregivers at Golden Age Nursing Home in Guthrie, Ok and Good Shepherd Hospice.
A memorial life celebration for Robin will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Baggerley Funeral Home Chapel, 930 South Broadway, Edmond, OK 73034.
