Shirley was born on March 14, 1927, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Amzie and Edna Baird. She was raised in Sedan, Kansas, and graduated from Sedan High School in 1945. She continued her education at Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha before transferring to Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, Kansas, where she met the love of her life, Harry Liggett. The two were married on February 29, 1948, and shared 75 years of devoted marriage before Harry’s passing on April 27, 2023.
Shirley had a deep and unwavering love for Jesus, and she never hesitated to share her faith with those around her. As a pastor’s wife, she faithfully served alongside Harry, using her gifts of music to play the piano and sing. She also brought her strong leadership and unmistakable personality to every ministry in which they participated. Together, Shirley and Harry served as coordinators for more than 75 Lay Witness Missions across seven states. They also spend 15 years teaching Life in the Spirit seminars weekly. Throughout their years in ministry, they touched countless lives, furthering the Kingdom of heaven.
She was a woman of many talents and passions. Shirley loved to do cross-stitching, word search puzzles and read. She was also a wonderful cook, remembered fondly for her delicious fried chicken, biscuits and gravy and banana cupcakes. Above all, Shirley cherished her role as a mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She rarely missed a game, recital, concert, or activity, always showing up to cheer on her grandchildren with enthusiasm and pride.
Shirley had a vibrant personality and a direct way of communicating and there was never any doubt about where you stood with her. She was a natural planner who appreciated order and structure, and she carried those traits throughout her life with purpose and humor.
After Harry retired from ministry, they moved to Edmond, Oklahoma, to be closer to family. There, they became active members of New Covenant United Methodist Church, where they quickly found a welcoming and loving church family.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her parents; and her two brothers.
She is survived by her son, Don Liggett and wife Jane of Lawrence, Kansas; her daughter, Carolyn Miller and husband Robert of Edmond, Oklahoma; her grandchildren, John Miller and wife Melissa, Katie Smith and husband Josh, and Peter Miller and wife Crystal; and eight great-grandchildren: Austin, Bella, Beau, Carson, Gibson, Lucca, Kai & Josephine.
Shirley will be remembered for her strong faith, her servant’s heart, her many talents, and her deep love for her family. Her legacy of devotion, generosity, and unwavering support will continue to live on in all who knew and loved her.
