He was born April 24th, 1955 in Decatur, Illinois, to parents Mark and Winifred Hawes.
He is survived by his wife, Lee, their two four legged fur babies, Molly and Joy, his brother Bob and wife Carol of Rock Island, Illinois, nephew Bill and wife Holly of Crystal Lake, Illinois, and their two children Mary and Robert.
He received his B.S, Civil Engineering, from Southern Illinois University in 1978 and soon landed and remained in the Sooner state to become one of the founding employees of the OKC branch of Terracon Consultants Inc.
He was well respected in the Construction Services Industry and worked for Terracon for over 20 years, as well as Pier Drillers, and most currently Intertek-PSI.
He was the current President of the OKC chapter of the American Concrete Institute, past President and board member of the OKC chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors, board member of the American Subcontractors Association, and a member of the Associated General Contractors professional group.
Tom took great pride in “his” buildings throughout Oklahoma with some of the landmarks being: Devon World Headquarters, OSU Engineering Building, OPUBCO headquarters, OKC Downtown Library, OKC History Museum, Renaissance Hotel, Sonic Headquarters, and the new Omni Hotel and Convention center.
In all of his professional life, he was the most profoundly and deeply moved when assisting with rubble removal following the OKC bombing of the Murrah Federal building. Tom had signed up this past year to participate in the 5K for the 20th Anniversary of the Memorial Marathon as a living tribute to those who were injured or perished in this horrific event.
Anyone who knew Tom knew of his love of sports, woodworking, cars, motorcycles and the great outdoors.
He and his family were lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fans and even have a commemorative brick placed outside the new Busch Stadium reflecting this.
He was also a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan and failed miserably when trying to do the “Lambeau Leap” one year while taking a tour of that facility.
He was a collegiate tennis player, an avid golfer, and bicyclist.
He met his wife while playing co-ed volleyball and was resigned to the fact that he had better ask her to marry him as he could not seem to beat her in H-O-R-S-E, even knowing that she had played basketball in college for OU!
He loved to create in his home workshop all things wooden including shelves, kitchen cabinet doors and drawers, and furniture.
Like every boy, his passion was for cars and motorcycles. With help from his friends, he rebuilt an old Kawasaki police motorcycle, more recently finishing a frame off restoration of a 1971 Toyota Land Cruiser, and restored his beloved Porsche 911 convertible to working order.
Tom was also passionate about the outdoors and working on the RV which he and his wife had already shared many adventures and planned this to be their “home away from home” upon retirement.
He will be missed by all who knew him, but is no doubt looking down from heaven on all of “his” buildings and thanking everyone for the memories.
Due to the current pandemic, no memorial services are planned at this time. There will soon be a video tribute in his name on the Baggerley Funeral Home website, so please take time to leave condolences and memories for his loved ones to cherish.
In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the National Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, or a charity of your choice in his name.
