

Winifred (Garvin) Hughes went to be with her heavenly family on August 10, 2010 at the age of 89. She was born on Nov. 20, 1920, to Jacob and Sabie (Bagwell) Garvin at her grandparents home in rural Pontotoc Co., OK. At the age of 6 weeks they moved to McClain Co., OK. She graduated from Washington High School, attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, OK, and Draughons Business School in OKC, OK. Winifred was very proficient in shorthand and an excellent speller and typist. She was employed at the McClain County Court House in Purcell, OK, the FBI in Washington D.C., and the Douglas Aircraft Employment Office in OKC,OK. Winifred married Chief Petty Officer, Eugene N. Hughes, on Navy Day, October 27, 1943, at The First Baptist Church in OKC, OK. During Eugene’s navy career, she moved with him all over the country. They were blessed with 56 years of marriage until his death March 9, 2000. They were also blessed with three children: Pamela, Fredrick and Ronald. Winifred was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and her husband, Eugene. Winifred is survived by children, Pamela and Rev. Frank McKinley of Wichita, KS; Fredrick and Virginia Hughes of OKC, Ok and Ronald and Susan Hughes of Shawnee, OK; two sisters, Willodean Wells of Norman, Ok, Wynema Landers of Purcell, OK; two sisters-in-law, Julia Garvin of Purcell, OK and Ruth Wathen of Tulsa, OK. She has 3 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Winifred was known for her great memory which was demonstrated by her remembering the birthdays and anniversaries of all her friends and relatives. Winifred was also known as a perfectionist. She had a motto stating “a place for everything and everything in its place”. She loved people and loved to cook and prepare many great homemade dinner and birthday cakes for her family and friends. Winifred was a member of Britton Baptist Church. A formal visitation will be from 6-8 pm on Friday, August 13, at Baggerley Funeral Home. A celebration of Winifred’s life will be 10:00 am, Saturday, August 14, at Baggerley Funeral Home in Edmond with interment following at Rose Hill Burial Park in OKC, OK
