Passed away peacefully on August 19, at the age of 88 years. Andrew will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Sheila; children, Rebecca (Keith), Andrew (Val) and Edward (Marina); grandchildren, Edward, Anna, Suzanne, Peter, Michelle and Nicole; siblings, Herbert (Glenda), Madge (Peter) and John (Norma); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Andrew was born in Jamaica in 1927 and grew up in Belize. He moved to London, England for medical school at the age of 17. He completed his MBBS and FRCS at St Thomas' Hospital. The kindness and generosity of the people he met in England had a lasting effect on his life. Andrew married Sheila in 1955 and they returned to Jamaica to work and raise their family. He practiced neurosurgery at the University of the West Indies and found teaching particularly fulfilling. He delighted in the successes of his students. The family immigrated to Edmonton in 1975. Andrew enjoyed working at the University Hospital, first as the head of the Emergency Department then as Chairman of Ambulatory Care. He retired in 1992 and continued to pursue his passions of cooking, reading, listening to music, gardening and growing orchids. The family would like to send out a special thank-you to all of his caregivers, particularly Eunice, who made it possible for him to remain in his home this past year. The family would also like to thank Drs. Hayward and Choi and the staff of 5D4 at the Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre for their care and compassion in Andrew’s final days.
