It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barry Arnold Goertz, a beloved husband, father, Papa and brother. Barry was a man who wore many hats—literally and figuratively—devoting his life to his family, his work, and his community. He passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on February 25, 2026, at the age of 66.
Barry was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on October 21, 1959. He grew up in Edmonton before his family settled on an acreage just outside of Spruce Grove, where they were surrounded by extended family and a close-knit community. He was proud to be part of the first graduating class of Spruce Grove Composite High School in 1977. Throughout his life, he remained deeply connected to his roots and to the communities he called home.
Barry was predeceased by his parents, Arnold and Ardyth; his brother, Wayne; and his in-laws, Barry and Barbara Glasgow. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Jan; his children, Jennie (Mark), Andrea, Jamie (Vicki), Shannon (Jamie), and Hardip; as well as his treasured grandchildren,: Bradley, Kimberley, Katelyn, Tyrell, Luke, Zoey, Jerome, Leah, Jessica, Cole, Asher, Kayden, Ella, Jordette, Enzo, Alyson, Donovan, and Lucas. He is also survived by his siblings, Kevin and Cathy (Tyler); his sister-in-law, Moe; his brothers-in-law, Bill (Kirstie), Glen (Daidrie), and Russ (Sandy); along with a large and loving extended family and many dear friends who will miss him immensely.
Above all else, Barry was a devoted family man. He cherished time spent with family and friends and, more than anything, loved fishing aboard his pride and joy, “My Honey.”
Barry was deeply passionate about serving his community. He first took on the role of firefighter, soon after becoming Fire Chief. He went on to serve on town council and, for the past four years, proudly held the position of Mayor of Andrew.
Sports were also a lifelong passion—whether playing hockey, ball, or curling. Over the years, he served as a referee, coach, and mentor, always eager to give back and support others. Barry welcomed many into his life and treated them like family.
He lived fully and unapologetically, embracing adventure, laughter, and even the occasional misstep with unwavering enthusiasm. He was often the last to leave a gathering, soaking up every moment. His presence was larger than life, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the University of Alberta Hospital, The Cross Cancer Institute and Smoky Lake Hospital for their compassionate care and endeavours. Without you we would not have had these last four years with him.
A celebration of Barry’s life will be held at Andrew Community Centre, 5401 51 Avenue Andrew, AB on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at 1:00 pm. Cremation entrusted to Memories Funeral Home.
