Born in Saskatoon, Diane was a force of nature in pursuing her love of education. Both personally and professionally, Diane had a life-long desire to teach, mentor, counsel, and learn. She started her teaching career in Hepburn, SK, before making Alberta her home. She taught in Bow Island, and then Coleman, before moving to Edmonton to reach for higher educational opportunities.
After retiring as an accomplished elementary school principal in Edmonton, Diane went on to create a curriculum for teaching English in China, and took on several teaching roles in both China and Taiwan. She truly loved to explore the world. Along with the love of her life, Glen, Diane happily spent much of her time either travelling or planning new adventures.
Diane never lost her zeal to broaden her own horizons, and take on new challenges. She completed a Masters Degree in Education in her 40's, and started a Doctorate program in her 60's. She was also 'game' to try almost anything, at any age, and was zip-lining in Costa Rica in her 70's. She just never stopped growing.
Diane's vibrant spirit and infectious energy lit up every room she entered. Her quick wit never failed to bring laughter to those around her, and her wisdom always prompted thought. Her innate ability to guide and inspire others, with such passion, earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends. Whether in the home or the workplace, her leadership left an enduring legacy that continues to influence those she led. She believed in her higher power, and was a beloved addiction counselor and mentor, helping dozens of people to improve and forever change their lives.
She is survived by her husband Glen Bishop, stepdaughter Judith (Bernie) Pyra, stepson Grant Bishop, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren (pre-deceased by grandson Steven Bishop). She leaves behind her brother, Ron (Geri) Fernet, and sister Jacqueline Fernet, (pre-deceased by brothers David Fernet and Greg Fernet), and 7 nieces/nephew, and 4 great-nephews/niece. Diane enriched us with the gifts of love, strength, and resilience.
We would like to sincerely thank the staff of St. Joseph's Auxiliary Hospital for the excellent care of Diane for so many years, and for providing an atmosphere of dignity for her. Your kindness will not be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you consider making a 'random act of kindness' in Diane's honour and memory.
A Celebration of Life for Diane will be held Friday, May 3, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Hainstock's Funeral Home, 9810 34 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.
