Doris was born in Camrose Alberta, then spent her formative years in Rimbey. Upon graduation from high school Doris moved to Edmonton to pursue her education in Nursing. She made cherished, lifelong friends while at the University of Alberta. Doris met George, the love of her life, while working at the U of A Hospital. They married and had three children that she cherished. For many years, Doris was busy being the best support for her children, as they engaged in many activities. Doris shared her love of horses with her daughter, and they had many happy times together at the stable or during horse shows.
Doris was passionate about lifelong learning. She returned to University and completed her Master of Arts in Community Development, at the age of 53.
Doris was a great example of how to adopt a healthy lifestyle. She was easily spotted running or walking in bright coloured apparel. Health promotion was a passion of hers. When family or friends had any health concerns or questions, Doris did not hesitate to provide support, information, and a helping hand.
Doris loved to travel, always eager to explore new places and learn about local culture.
Doris also enjoyed traveling to Laguna Beach and more recently, Victoria, but her favourite place was always the family cottage at Ma-Me-O Beach.
Doris was community minded and keen to volunteer. She was very involved with the development of Peaceful Valley Provincial Recreation Area, where elderly disabled people can enjoy the serenity of nature.
Doris enjoyed curling, golf and hiking trips with friends. Anniversary hiking trips with family to Lake O’Hara and Larch Valley were a special tradition. She was a long time Edmonton Eskimo Fan and enjoyed post game banter with friends.
Family was of utmost importance to Doris, she especially cherished her granddaughters. Her life was full of positivity and gratitude. She was a ray of sunshine and had an encouraging word and smile for anyone she encountered.
Doris will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Janet Rutledge, granddaughters Cara and Megan, and her devoted nieces Kathleen, Erin and Iris.
Doris was predeceased by her beloved husband George, sons David and Alan Moonie, brother Neville and sister Enid.
We would like to thank the staff of Venvi Riverbend, who showed such kindness and compassion over this past year.
