It is with mixed emotions, profound love and great sadness, that we announce the passing of Duncan Alexander Stewart on Tuesday evening, May 20 at the U of A Hospital. He was 86 years old.
Sandy is survived and deeply mourned by his loving wife Beth Day–Stewart. He also leaves to mourn his three children: Karen H. Stewart (Dan Themig), James D. Stewart, Andrea L. Klas (Matt) and their mother, Joan Yates Stewart. In addition, mourning him are his two step children Lisa Willis and Jeffery Notton and 13 grandchildren.
Sandy was the oldest of 7 siblings four of whom predeceased him, Neil, Kathleen, Malcolm, and Doug. He was also predeceased by his mother and father Dr. Duncan R. Stewart and Edith Jays Stewart. He is survived by two sisters Marilyn Wilson (Warren) and Betty Less and two sister’s –in-law, Christine Stewart and Mary-Jane Stewart.
With the exception of attending the University of Montana for four years, Sandy grew up and lived and worked in Edmonton. He graduated from the University of Alberta in law and went to the Bar in 1966. He loved the law! His greatest honour in 2001 was to receive, jointly with his dear friend Jim Ross, the Distinguished Service Award from the Law Society of Alberta and Canadian Bar Association. This was for the creation and operation of the ASSIST program to help lawyers and their families. In addition Sandy was very proud of two other major accomplishments in his years of practice which were the creation and early operation of the Health Science Association of Alberta and the establishment of the Insulators Pension Plan of Alberta.
Sandy was a cancer survivor and was a friend of AA in his 50th year of sobriety. Although he loved people in general and helping them if he could, his greatest love was his family. He also loved the outdoors and in that regard spent a lot of his time pursuing his different interests, field trialing dogs, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, quadding, biking and golf.
He will be sorely missed but in our hearts forever.
We would like to thank the staff of the EMS, the emergency department and unit E3E at the University of Alberta hospital who took care of Sandy during his stay.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at Hainstock Funeral Home, 9810-34 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at 2pm.
