Erwin Henry Gruszczynski

Erwin Henry Gruszczynski was born on July 27, 1943, in Miedzybrodziu nad Dunajcem, Poland. From a young age, Erwin faced the challenge of losing his father when he was just one year old. Alongside his older sister, he was lovingly raised by their mother, Ada.

After completing his education, Erwin began his professional journey at Chlodnice Kominove in Poland. Demonstrating initiative and skill, he also launched his own private business, providing custom metalwork services to professionals in his community.

In 1976, Erwin left Poland and spent two years working in West Germany. After returning home, he soon travelled to Canada for a visit. Captivated by the Canadian way of life, the vast blue sky, majestic mountains, lakes, rivers, and the abundant wildlife, Erwin developed a deep appreciation for the country’s freedom and natural beauty. Inspired by this experience, he returned to Poland with the goal of bringing his family to Canada.

In December 1980, during a particularly cold and snowy winter, Erwin and his family made the move to Edmonton, Alberta. He gained employment in the oil industry, where he dedicated 29 years of service. Upon retiring in 2009, Erwin continued to lead an active life, keeping busy with projects at home and at the lake.

Erwin was passionate about gardening, BBQing, and taking evening walks. He also enjoyed travelling to the USA, Mexico, and Europe. Outdoor activities such as riding motorcycles, quading, hiking, and gathering around campfires brought him great joy. A true animal lover, his last 4-legged companion was a loyal black Labrador named Aza.

Known for his kindness, friendliness, sense of humour, and energetic spirit, Erwin was cherished by those who knew him. He enjoyed watching historical documentaries and classic movies. Above all, Erwin’s greatest priority was his family. He treasured every moment with his wife and son, valuing and protecting them fiercely. His devotion to his loved ones was unwavering, and he will be remembered as a wonderful husband and best friend for 58 years to Maria, as well as father and mentor to his son Mark. He will be dearly missed.

Erwin was predeceased by his by his father, Franciszek Gruszczynski, and mother Adela Gruszczynski. Erwin is survived by his wife Maria Gruszczynski, son Mark Gruszczynski, and sister Halina Szymkowiak.

A memorial service to celebrate Erwin's life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 10:00 AM., at Our Lady Queen of Poland Catholic Church (Polish) – Kosciól Matki Bożej Królowej Polski, located at 9906-83 Avenue, N.W., Edmonton, Alberta, T6E 2C1.
