He attended Baguio City College where he earned his teaching degree. Within a few years of teaching, he was elected as the President of the Baguio City Teacher’s Association, the youngest person to have held this position. In 1966, his pioneering spirit brought him to Canada to continue his teaching career in Legal, Alberta. Two years later, 1968, he moved with his family to Edmonton, Alberta, where he settled for the remainder of his life.
Gilbert had a generous spirit and took great pleasure in contributing to his community and church. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, and a co-advisor for the Edmonton Ilocano Association for the past 25 years.
He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Estelita Sibayan, his son Glenn and daughter Gladys. He also leaves 5 grandchildren – Cassandra, Joshua, Tyler, Jared and Taeus along with 4 great-granchildren, and his 3 sisters Carmen, Rosalina and Julita. He has joined his brother, Genesio, sister, Josefa and his father Dionisio and mother Catalina, who all passed before him.
